Wooden Candle Holders

Five hole candle holder

Square butcher block candle holder

I purchased the twelve hole candle holder shown below from a very fun and unique boutique in Camas, Washington called Lizzabeth A.  I have enjoyed changing the decorations in the holder for different seasons and decided to make a couple of variations of this idea.  Below are the instructions to make your own wooden candle holders or you can purchase one already made from Lizzabeth A. Have fun dressing up the candle holders with candles, flowers, glass ornaments and other decorations.  You are only limited by your imagination.  Look to the bottom of this page for seasonal decorating ideas.

Wooden Candle Holder (5 holes)

Powertools needed for this project:

Chop Saw

Drill Press with a 1 1/8” Forstner bit

Jointer

Sander

Clamps

Misc: wood glue, ruler, pencil, lemon oil wood finish

Instructions

Start with two boards that are 1 ¾” x 4 ¼” x 19”.  Note: The sample was made with African hard wood. Spread wood glue on one of the boards and put them together.

Clamp the two boards together and let it dry overnight.  When you remove the clamps your board will now be 3 ½” wide. Choose which side will be the top of the candle holder.

Clean up the edges of the board by running it through a jointer.

Draw an angle at each end of the board.

Cut along the angle line at each end of the board.  The longest part of the board will be the top of the candle holder.

Mark where the center of each hole will be with a pencil.  Hint: Use the glue line as the center line of the width of the board. Find the center of the length of the board next. Mark that spot. Each hole will be 1 1/8” wide. Allow 7/8” space between each hole. Mark a total of 5 holes.

Drill each hole. Sand the entire piece of wood and remove the dust with a damp cloth. Apply lemon oil or your favorite wood finish to the candle holder.

Place glass votives in each of the holes. Fill the votives with candles.
