Vintage Table Cloth Quilt

Vintage table cloths make wonderful quilt tops. Using a table cloth saves many hours of piecing blocks of fabric together. Just add a couple of borders to the edges of the table cloth and you are ready to put the quilt together. Use the design on the table cloth as a guide for quilting. You can quilt by hand, machine, or simply tie the quilt. Vintage table clothes can be found in antique stores for about $15-$25. Be sure to check for stains and worn spots before you buy.

Materials

Fabric: Choose fabrics that match the design and color of your table cloth. Many vintage fabrics are being reproduced so you should be able to find matching colors fairly easily.

Borders: 1 ½” strips x the perimeter of the table cloth

6” strips x the perimeter of the table cloth after the small border is sewn

Binding: 2 ½” strips x the perimeter after both borders are sewn

Backing: about 4 yards

Cotton batting: slightly larger in all directions than the quilt top

Sewing machine, thread, scissors, straight pins, safety pins, iron

Instructions: Use ¼” seam allowance

Sew the 1 1/2” border to the sides of the table cloth. Trim edges even with the edge of the table cloth. Sew the small border to the top and bottom edges of the table cloth. Press the seams to the border.

Sew the 6” border to each edge of the table cloth. Sew the sides first and then the top and bottom.

Lay the backing fabric right side down on your work surface. Smooth out any wrinkles and tape the corners and edges to hold it tight. The backing fabric should be about 3 inches larger than the quilt top in all directions.

Lay the cotton batting on top of the backing fabric. Smooth and tape it in place to hold it tight.

Lay the quilt top right side up on top of the cotton batting. Smooth out any wrinkles with you hand.

Pin all three layers together with safety pins. Start in the center of the quilt top and work your way out to the edges. Place the pins 4-6 inches apart. Close all the pins when you have pinned the whole quilt top.

Close the pins when the entire quilt is pinned.

For tying: Thread a needle with thick cotton thread or yarn. Make a small stitch through all three layers of the quilt.  Pull the thread through the quilt leaving about 3 inches at the end. Cut the thread and tie the two ends of the thread in a square knot close to the surface of the quilt. Repeat this step until you have covered the whole quilt. Each tie should be 3-4 inches apart.

For machine quilting: Use a darning presser foot to create a free motion design on the quilt top. Lower the feed dogs on your machine. Stitch around the design on the table cloth or create your own quilting pattern.

For hand quilting: Use a large hoop to hold the quilt tight while you stitch. Stitch the area in the hoop and then more the hoop to the next position. Start in the middle of the quilt and work out toward the edges.

Machine quilt, hand quilt or sew ties in the quilt.

When the entire blanket has been quilted, trim the backing fabric and batting to match the edges of the quilt top.

Cut 2 ½ strips of fabric for the binding. Stitch the strips together to make one long strip. Be sure it is long enough to go around the entire quilt.  Fold the strip in half to make a 1 ¼” strip. Press with a hot iron.

Stitch the binding to the front of the quilt with raw edges together.

Fold the binding to the back of the quilt and hand stitch the edge.
