Vintage Hankie Handbag

Create a fun and funky handbag using vintage hankies and fuzzy trims for accents.  Look for colorful hankies in antique stores or your Grandmother’s dresser.

Materials

Fabric to complement your hankie:

Two pieces 11” x 15 ½” for the outside of the handbag

Two pieces  11” x 15 ½” for the liner

Two pieces 9 ½” x 3 ¼ for the handbag handles

One piece 7” x 13” to cover bottom weight of the handbag

Pink fuzzy trim: 31 inches long

Two bamboo handles

Heavy cardboard: 3” x 11 ½”

Hot glue gun

Sewing machine, thread, scissors, needle

Instructions: ½” seam allowance

Fold the hankie in half and iron a crease at the fold. Cut the hankie on the fold line. Place the hankie face up on one of the outside fabric pieces. Stitch across the top of the hankie to hold it in place. Layer the other outside fabric piece on top of the hankie with right sides together. Stitch around the sides and bottom of the handbag.

Layer the liner fabric pieces together with right sides touching. Stitch around the sides and bottom of the liner. Leave an opening at the bottom of the liner large enough to pull the bamboo handles through.

Open the bottom corners of the handbag and lay them flat. Stitch across the corner 1 ½” from the point.  Repeat this step for the liner.

To add the handles: With right sides together, fold the 9 ½” x 3 ¼” fabric piece in half so it is now 4 ¾” x 3 ¼”.  Stitch the fabric together on the opposite side of the fold. (Use a ¼” seam allowance) Turn right sides out and press.  Wrap the fabric piece around the bamboo handle and pin it to the top/center of the handbag. Repeat this step of the other handle.

Pin the liner to the outside of the handbag with right sides together. The handles will be sandwiched between the fabric pieces. Stitch around the top of the handbag.

Turn the handbag right sides out through the opening in the bottom of the liner. Stitch the opening closed. Press and top stitch around the top edge of the handbag. Hand stitch pink fuzzy trim to the top edge of the handbag.

Wrap the cardboard with fabric and secure it to the back with hot glue. Place the cardboard in the bottom of the handbag.
