Ice Cream Sundae Pincushions

What do ice cream sundaes and pincushions have in common? See for yourself as you create these cute and whimsical pincushions. This is an ideal project of girl scouts, women's organizations, quilting guilds, and craft nights.

Materials

Plastic Ice cream sundae dish

Bright colored fabrics with small prints

Heavy plastic spoon

Large circle templates

Bright colored plastic straw

Pencil

3/4" magnet

Polyester batting

Scissors, needle, thread

Hot glue gun

Glass and bead glue

Straight pins

Tape measure

Metal thimble

Instructions

  1. Trace and cut out three fabric circles. One 8", one 5", and one 2.5".

  1. Sew a gathering stitch around the perimeter of each fabric circle. Pull the thread and draw the edges of the circles together. Stuff the circles with batting. Pull the thread tight and secure the thread ends with a knot.

  1. Stack the stuffed circles on top of each other starting with the largest, then medium, then small. Pin them in place and hand stitch them together. Put a ring of hot glue inside the plastic sundae dish. Leave one small area without glue for the straw. Stuff the largest fabric circle into the dish and hold it in place until the glue has hardened. Slide the straw into the dish beside the fabric.

  1. Glue a magnet in the bowl of the spoon with glass and bead glue. Lay the dish on its side and glue the spoon in front of the dish using the same glue. Let dry

  1. Place the thimble on the magnet and hang the tape measure over the spoon handle.

Project variations

Paint the inside of a small ice cream dish, Irish coffee mug, or soda glass.  Make one or two fabric puffs and glue the puffs into the top of the dish, mug, or glass. Top with a cherry, stir stick, or small embellishments that look like sprinkles.
