Floor Cloth

Floorcloths are decorative accessories for your home.  They are painted canvases or “art” for your floors. They were the predecessor to linoleum and over the years their popularity and “trendyness” have had their ups and downs.  They are currently enjoying a surge in popularity with brighter colors and more contemporary designs.

This version of a floorcloth is very easy to make. The canvas is pre-primed so you can start painting immediately. Enjoy creating your own design or recreating the one shown above.

Instructions

  1. Choose a pattern for your floorcloth.  Trace the design onto the cloth with a light pencil mark.  Note: Patterns are available on the internet or you can create your own design.

  1. Choose your color palette and then paint the background areas of the floorcloth.

  1. Paint the detail of the floorcloth.  Let the cloth dry over night and then varnish the painted surface of the cloth.  Let dry.

  1. Apply double sided tape to the back edges of the floorcloth.

  1. Remove the protective backing from the double sided tape.

  1. Fold the edges under ½” and press firmly with your finger to adhere the tape. Miter the corners by cutting away the excess canvas at each corner.

Note: Your floorcloth may ripple a little bit when you are painting the canvas. When the project is complet, the manufacturer suggests that you lay the cloth on a flat surface and iron the back of the floorcloth.  This will help remove the ripples.
