Terry Cloth Baby Gifts

Three quick and easy baby gifts made with one towel set.  All you need is one bath towel, one hand towel, and one wash cloth.  Add some coordinating ribbon and you have a wonderful trio for your next baby shower.

Project One

Hooded Baby Bath Towel

  1. Fold a hand towel in half lengthwise.  Measure 10” from one end of the towel through both layers.  The 10” piece will be the hood for the towel.  Set aside the remaining towel piece for the terry bunny.  Instructions for the bunny are below.

  1. Sew a piece of ribbon or rick-rack to the edge of the 10” piece of hand towel.   The woven band on the towel is a perfect place to sew the ribbon.

  1. Fold the hand towel piece in half with right sides together.  Stitch along the raw edge of the towel.

  1. Open the towel to form a triangle with the raw seam allowance exposed.  Draw a long across the top point of the towel and stitch.  This will create a nice shape to the hood.

  1. Turn the hood right sides out.

  1. Find the center of the bath towel and pin the hood to the towel with right sides together.  Stitch the hood in place.

  1. Sew a piece of matching ribbon or rick-rack to the center of each woven band on the bath towel.

Project two

Wash Cloth Gift Set

  1. Sew a piece of ribbon to the front side of a wash cloth.  Use the woven band on the towel for a guide.  Stitch only the center four inches and leave the tails loose.

  1. Turn the wash cloth ribbon side down on your work surface.  Fold the bottom half of the cloth up to the woven band.  Stitch the both sides of the folded area of the wash cloth.  Stitch the cloth in two more places to create pockets in the cloth.

  1. Fill the pockets with bath items such as shampoo, comb and brush, and baby powder.

  1. Fold the wash cloth in thirds at each of the stitch lines. Tie the ribbons at the front of the cloth.  Add a bath toy to the bow.

Project Three

Terry Cloth Bunny

  1. The bunny is cut out of the left over piece of hand towel that was used for the hooded bath towel.  Cut out the following pieces: One terry bunny body, two terry ears, one terry tail, one coordinating fabric body, and two coordinating fabric ears.  See pattern below.

Enlarge pattern to the size indicated.

  1. Ears: Pin one terry and one fabric ear together with right sides together. Stitch around the ear.  Repeat this for the other ear.

  2. Turn ears right sides out.

  1. Body: Pin the bunny body pieces together with right sides together. Pin the ears inside the two body pieces at the top of the head. Stitch around the body leaving an opening at the bottom of the bunny.

  2. Turn right sides out.  Stuff with batting.  Hand stitch the opening closed.

  1. Tail: Stitch a gathering thread around the edge of the terry circle.

  2.  Pull the thread to gather the edges. Stuff with batting. Pull the thread tight around the batting.

  3. Hand stitch the tail to the back of the bunny.

  1. Tie a bow around each ear and around the neck.
